Pont del Bisbe (Barcelona)

Description

The Pont del Bisbe (Bishop's Bridge) in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter is one of the city's most photographed spots. Despite its authentic-looking medieval appearance, it is a relatively modern addition to the city - it was built in 1928 for the 1929 International Exposition. The architect, Rubió i Bellver hid a carved skull pierced by a dagger under the bridge as a protest because the city council rejected his grand plans to demolish and rebuild the whole area. Local folklore warns that if the skull is ever removed, the city of Barcelona will fall.
