Layers of History (Jerusalem)

Built by Caliph Abd al-Malik between 685 and 692 CE, the original octagonal plan and wooden dome are preserved to this day. The most significant change to the exterior came during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century, when the original mosaics were replaced with the characteristic, vibrant blue ceramic tiles seen today.
