Tilework on the Dome of the Rock (Jerusalem)

The tiles on the exterior were installed by Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century. Many current tiles are 1960s replacements from Italy for the original damaged ones. Surah Ya-Sin (the 'Heart of the Quran') is inscribed across the top of the tile work and was commissioned also by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.
